Come join a rapidly growing team as an Optical Engineer in Facebook Reality Labs. You will be responsible for design, testing and productizing an optical display system that is core to delivering transformative experiences in Oculus AR/VR products. You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on releasing product display-systems that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing (HVM). We are seeking an engineer experienced with design and evaluation of AR/VR display system; able to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and focused on execution while providing clear and effective communication to remove barriers across teams.
BS in the field of Physics, Engineering or other optics-related fields or equivalent work experience.
5+ years of experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
Knowledge and experience with optics fundamentals including display optics, imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.
3+ experience with hands-on test, prototype build, debugging, and calibration of optical system, equipment, and instrumentation.
Experience with optical instruments such as interferometer, spectrometer, polarimeters, colorimeter, etc.
Experience with at least one standard optical design software (e.g. Zemax, Code V, Fred) for optical design, simulation and tolerance analysis.
Proficiency in data acquisition and imaging processing in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW or other common lab programming language.
Experience working in a lab environment for display or optical systems.
Lead optical system evaluation, design validation, and prototyping for our current and next generation AR/VR display systems.
Design and build custom optical systems for characterizing optical parameters (MTF, contrast ratio, color and luminous uniformity, optical effect, stray light, etc.) for AR/VR display.
Develop optical instrumentation including instrument control, data acquisition, imaging process with MATLAB, Python, or other software languages.
Perform root cause analysis and failure analysis of AR/VR display module using optical simulation methods and reproducing experimentally.
Optical design, tolerance analysis, and prototype of AR/VR display system.
Establish and document optical engineering specifications, including key performance metrics and test requirements for optical system and components.
Collaborate with internal cross functional teams and external industry partners to develop and mature state-of-the-art technologies (e.g. material, process, metrology, and design) to extend the horizon of AR/VR experience.
Contribute to future optics technology roadmap.
Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.
In-depth experience and knowledge of AR/VR display technology, including miniature projectors (ULED, LCOS, DLP, etc.), freeform optics, geometrical waveguide, diffractive or holographic waveguide, etc.
Experience with design/manufacturing of small form-factor display systems.
Rapid prototyping experience (i.e. 3D printing, laser cutting, diamond-turning etc.).
Experience with multiple full life cycle product launches.
