Facebook Reality Labs Research is looking for an exceptional Mechanical Engineer to help create state-of-the-art Face-Tracking and Body-Tracking capture systems to revolutionize photorealistic telepresence in virtual reality, thus enabling the ability to interact with anyone, anytime, anywhere. We have made some important advances, but it will take a team with a wide spectrum of skills to fully realize this goal.
As a Mechanical Engineer at FRL, you will develop state-of-the-art prototype systems, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation motion capture systems. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams; can brainstorm big ideas; work in new technology areas; able to drive a concept into a prototype; and can envision how a prototype could transition into a ruggedized system. Starting with a broad scientific background, be willing to become a quick expert in a new area, and quickly build new prototypes using novel materials and/or by integrating structures in new ways leveraging a strong mechanical background. We are looking for a hands-on builder of opto-mechanical systems that can deal with sub-micron tolerances.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
Experience in NX or SolidWorks including Teamcenter/PDM
Knowledge of manufacturing techniques (machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, injection molding, etc.)
Experience in working with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Product Design, Research, etc.
Experience designing for the mechanical constraints of PCBs, FPCs, etc.
Experience working with third party vendors to develop system components and drive requirements
Spearhead mechanical design, integration, testing, and documentation of capture systems that include components such as cameras, audio, lighting, and capture electronics
Design, build and test of rapid prototypes which integrate electrical, mechanical and software components
Transition prototypes into production level systems
Collaborate with researchers and other engineers across multiple disciplines to discuss, develop and optimize designs for systems
Support research and exploration of new sensors and sub-systems to deliver the next generation of capture systems
M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
5+ years of experience
Experience in user comfort considerations for wearable products
Experience in FEA and thermal analysis
Familiarity with digital cameras, including CMOS image sensors and lens integration
Experience in mechanical design and integration of electrical subcomponents (preferably in a consumer product context)
