The Microsoft Applied Sciences Group incubates disruptive technologies for Microsoft’s next-gen hardware products and is working on several exciting projects that will shape how computers and other devices perceive the user and the user’s environment. Operating as a startup within the company, this team works closely with several research and product teams to bring compelling new experiences to the market. A lot of these experiences will be powered by computer vision – and as part of this team, you will have the unique opportunity to work on almost every aspect of a shipping vision system: camera optics, sensors, data pipeline and of course, developing and implementing the algorithms that make magic happen!

The team is growing, and we are looking for talented computer vision and machine learning researchers: people who love to invent and build new stuff that really works and can be deployed to millions of users.

  • Must be passionate about incubating new ideas, solving problems, and building working systems.
  • Must be self-motivated, proven collaborators, good communicators, attentive to details, and keen to learn.
  • Practical experience working in a highly performant team in an academic or industrial research environment.
  • Must be strong programmers with software engineering experience and good debugging skills.


  • Should hold a PhD or similar degree in computer vision or machine learning.
  • or have MSc and suitable alternative industrial research experience.

Must have experience in the following:

  • Image restoration, low-level image processing
  • Analysis of human face/body/clothes and lighting conditions.
  • Facial expression estimation and animation
  • Image synthesis, synthetic data generation, BRDFs and raytracing.
  • Experience on optimizing computer vision /machine learning models for execution on heterogenous platforms
  • Minimum 2 years of C++ (C++ 11 and newer) and Python
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in building deep learning models, developing products based such models
  • Worked on recent deep learning models based on CNN, LSTM, GAN
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in deep learning frameworks like pytorch, tensorflow, keras

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Publications in top-tier conferences or journals (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV etc.), or related patents
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals and theoretical background of machine learning techniques with the ability to defend design choices with respect to real-world tradeoffs.
  • Low level inference engines and APIs on Windows or Android
  • Hands-on experience on at least one of:
    • Probability and statistics
    • Strong mathematical skills
    • Experience in programming for GPU/FPGA/NPU platforms
    • Graphics programming (DirectX and OpenGL, Unity)
    • Numerical algorithms, e.g., nonlinear optimization
