And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives.

Join the Display Systems Research (DSR) team, whose work spans next-generation VR headsets, new types of computational displays, complex experimental systems, and AI-driven graphics. We are seeking a scientist to work at the intersection of basic and applied science. Members of our team have the opportunity to collaborate with academic institutions and publish their work. Projects can be studied with a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach thanks to internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering.

We are currently seeking a Research Scientist with a passion for technology to help develop next-generation optical components for world-leading AR/VR technologies. The focus of this role is on the exploration and development of novel components (such as micro-optical, nano-optical, electro-optical, or electro-mechanical components) that will enable new optical architectures. This scientist will take a lead role bridging between an exploratory system prototyping team and other specialty teams at Meta, as well as external vendors. This role requires experience in optics, device modeling, fabrication, system prototyping and metrology and an eagerness to explore new and technologies and skills.


Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in physics, applied physics, optical science, electronic engineering, computer science, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.

3+ years of experience on the design, development, and fabrication of micro-optical, nano-optical, electro-optical, and/or electro-mechanical components.

3+ years of experience with computational electromagnetics, such as FDTD, RCWA, etc.

3+ years of experience in system-level optical prototyping, including individual work constructing bench-top optical systems and metrology.

3+ years of experience with scientific programming languages (e.g., Python or MATLAB).

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.


Support exploration and feasibility of novel micro-optical, nano-optical, electro-optical, and/or electro-mechanical components and architectures for future AR/VR devices.

Lead requirements specification, design, and rigorous modeling and simulation of novel optical components.

Lead and direct component fabrication, prototyping, integration, and metrology efforts.

Support system level design, integration, and metrology efforts.

Collaborate with cross-disciplinary research and engineering teams and external vendors.

Contribute to cutting-edge research that results in industry-leading technology demonstrations and/or publications.

Additional Requirements(额外要求)

Experience in the design, development, and fabrication of one of more of the following device categories: spatial light modulators, MEMS, liquid crystal devices, photonic integrated circuits, and nanoscale structures.

Experience in modeling and simulation of electro-optical and/or electro-mechanical devices.

Experience in diffractive optics and analog/digital holography.

Extensive knowledge of optical materials.

Experience working with various light sources.

Extensive background in electromagnetism and optics, including work with illumination optics, imaging optics, waveguides, and display optics.

Experience with AR/VR display devices and their requirements.

Proven track record of achieving significant results, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading journals or conferences.

Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
