Reality Labs brings together a world-class team of researchers, developers, and engineers to create the future of virtual and augmented reality, which together will become as universal and essential as smartphones and personal computers are today. And just as personal computers have done over the past 45 years, AR and VR will ultimately change everything about how we work, play, and connect. We are developing all the technologies needed to enable breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, including optics and displays, computer vision, audio, graphics, brain-computer interface, haptic interaction, eye/hand/face/body tracking, perception science, and true telepresence. Some of those will advance much faster than others, but they all need to happen to enable AR and VR that are so compelling that they become an integral part of our lives.

We are currently seeking an innovative Optical Scientist with experience designing, modeling, and prototyping advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in optics, physics, or similar, and a strong background in optical system design and innovation.


Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, relevant technical field or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.

General knowledge of optics including display optics, imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.

In-depth knowledge in geometrical, physical optics, instrumental optics, or computational imaging.

Proficiency in one or more optical design tools such as Zemax, Code V, LightTools, FRED, or ASAP.

Proficiency with scientific programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or LabVIEW).

Experience with image quality metrics, optical metrology and characterization.

Experience in optical systems design and prototyping, including modeling and hands-on prototyping.

Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.


Conceive and develop novel optical systems and components for display and sensing applications that achieve high performance through a combination of optics and algorithms.

Develop system and subsystem components that are specified to meet the needs of advanced near-eye displays and sensors through design, prototyping, and characterization.

Implement proof-of-concept hardware prototypes that redefine the state-of-the-art in AR/VR/MR.

Engage cross-functionally with researchers and engineers to explore innovative concepts that advance the entire pipeline (hardware, software, integration, infrastructure and applications), and create compelling future AR/VR/MR experiences.

Contribute to demos and publications that showcase advanced near-eye display.

Additional Requirements(额外要求)

Expertise in a few of the following areas: optical instrumentations, illumination optics, lens design, semiconductor light sources.

Understanding of optical fabrication technologies and processes.

Understanding of optical coating and thin film technologies.

Understanding of digital display panel technologies.

Experience with polarization optics, diffractive optics, holographic optical components and systems, etc.

Experience working with optical fabrication shops by specifying optical components and selecting appropriate fabrication techniques.

Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at workshops or conferences (eg. SID, Optica, IEEE, and SPIE).

Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
