We are currently seeking innovative Research Scientists with experience in designing and modeling active liquid crystal (LC) devices for optical applications in the next generation of near-to-eye augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) displays. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in physics, optical science, electric engineering, materials science, or similar, and a strong background in liquid crystal physics, polarization optics, optics modeling, and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional team.


Ph.D. degree in physics, optical science, electric engineering, materials science, or equivalent practical experience.

Minimum of 3 years research experience with liquid crystal physics and optics.

Minimum of 3 years working experience in polarization optics and physical optics modeling tools, such as MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, and methods such as Jones Matrix, FDTD, or RCWA, etc.

Experience in electro-optical metrology of active LC devices.

Understanding of how polarization and diffractive optical elements work and are made.

Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.


Develop novel active liquid crystal (LC) optical devices for next generation near-to-eye augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) displays.

Incubate active LC optical devices concepts, in charge of active LC devices design and electro-optical performance validation at component and system level.

Develop new modeling and metrology tools, and improve existing tools to meet dynamic project needs.

Model/simulate LC director structures as related to advanced optical devices.

Model/simulate the optical responses of advanced active LC devices and their performance in AR/VR displays.

Work with coworkers to establish the simulation, fabrication, and metrology closed loop for active LC devices at component level.

Track the progress of active LC optical device development from external vendors.

Support component to system integration, and optical performance evaluation for delivering comfort and efficient AR/VR display systems.

Collaborate with the larger research and product development team to explore concepts, evaluate and drive active LC optical devices development to create compelling experiences at system level.

Additional Requirements(额外要求)

3+ years working experience in optical system design and polarization ray tracing tools of FRED, CODE V or ZEMAX etc.

3+ years research experience in applying existing and emerging optical technologies and incubating an idea from concept validation to system improvement of NEDs.

Experience with AR/VR display systems integration and metrology.

Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at workshops or conferences.
