At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Small Molecule Synthetic Chemist, specialized towards polymeric precursors to join our team, whose mission is to create highly flexible and functional devices for the next-generation human-computer interaction. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in small molecule synthesis as applied towards thermosetting and/or thermoplastic elastomers and chemical scale up methods and for someone who can work with a team of researchers who are solving the materials, manufacturing and performance needs for a new paradigm of worn devices. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.


Masters or PhD degree in organic chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience

7+ years experience with small molecule synthesis towards unique property applications, e.g. photopolymer resins, SLA resins, or siloxane chemistry

7+ years experience in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, purification, scale-up routes and current advances within these fields

4+ years experience translating property needs of polymers (including mechanical and/or electronic properties) into monomeric and precursor molecules, adapting chemistry to create targeted polymer architectures and meet bulk property needs


Designing and synthesizing new small molecules with efficient processes for future scale-up with an end objective of breaking engineering trade-offs (i.e. mechanical, conductivity) and enhanced device performance with molded and 2D/3D printed polymeric systems

Develop new synthetic chemistry solutions to enable new concepts within the fields of soft haptics, robotics, stretchable electronics and sensing devices

Collaborate with research scientists and engineers from broad disciplines to translate complex technology needs into appropriate experimental efforts and research directions

Document processes, including for IP disclosures, and implement quality control to enable external scale-up and provide larger volumes of materials to internal research partners

Additional Requirements(额外要求)

Experience with small molecules/monomer or polymer synthesis for use in thermosetting or thermoplastic elastomers (silicones, polyurethanes and/or SLA-resins for 3D printing)

Experience with analytical techniques, including HPLC, FTIR, UV-vis, Mass Spec, GC/HPLC, GPC, or NMR

Track-record of development towards scaled synthetic processes, with transfer to a third party contract manufacture

Track-record of developing synthetic routes and optimizing processes for complex target molecules
