One of the goals of the Surreal team at RL-R is to develop next generation image sensing architectures together with the computational imaging algorithm components needed to build a new generation of end-to-end real-time 3D scene understanding systems.
The Surreal team is seeking an experienced Technical Lead Manager (TLM) Research Scientist to lead and support a group of world-class researchers working on this initiative. We are looking for someone comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and capable to lead a fast-paced, highly flexible team spanning from image sensing hardware all the way to application specific algorithm development. We have a wide variety of problems that need solutions, and we depend on people who are comfortable embracing a creative, thoughtful and ambitious approach to both short-term and long-term problem-solving.
PhD degree in computational imaging, computer vision, machine learning or related field.
2+ years experience of hands-on technical and research scientist management.
2+ years expertise using modern deep learning based techniques, and familiarity with a major deep learning library (e.g., PyTorch, Tensorflow, Jax, etc.).
2+ years experience with software design and programming in C/C++ for development, debugging, testing and performance analysis.
Experience in one or more of the following domains: computational imaging, machine learning, computer cision, and virtual/augmented reality.
Leadership experience driving high-risk, high reward projects scientifically, including managing a team of research scientists and communicating to leadership.
Demonstrated experience in managing technical teams, including performance management.
Lead and support a small team of research scientists on a high-risk research project developing next generation end-to-end image sensing systems for computer vision, machine learning, and contextual AI algorithms.
Delivering with the team and cross-functional partners a series of rapidly evolving hardware and software prototypes demonstrating and validating progress.
Make deep technical contributions to the research project, combining technical leadership and people management.
Communicating cross-functionally and driving internal and external research collaborations, managing partner engagement and building future opportunities.
Partner with research program management and internal partner teams in developing research/incubation/productization roadmaps and strategies.
Communicate strategy, project objectives and reasoning to the team leadership.
Perform risk analysis, critical path determination and resource allocation in managing research projects towards successful outcomes.
Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, or fellowships, as well as first-authored publications in top conferences at leading conferences (e.g., NIPS, ICLR, ICML, SIGGRAPH, CVPR, ECCV and ICCV) or journals (e.g., PAMI, IJCV, JMLR, ToG) or equivalent industry experience.
5+ years of people management experience of research scientists, including seeking and hiring world class talent, etc.
Experience managing research teams and projects in computational imaging, computer vision, machine perception or virtual/augmented reality technologies from conception to end.
Experience managing joint hardware-software research development and associated rapid prototyping projects.
Demonstrated experience in recruiting technical teams.
Leadership and interpersonal communication experience in working across many disciplines, driving best practices, and mentoring team members.
