As a Process Engineer in the Waveguide Team, Facebook Reality Labs, you’ll ensure the delivery of world class products and prototype quality for waveguide component hardware and product platforms for near-eye displays.

In this role, you will be embedded in the Waveguide Packaging Development engineering team and be responsible for driving as well as implementing designs for a combination of tools and processes for wafer and chip level packaging solutions, possibly including wafer level lamination and packaging, localized coating applications, cleaning, singulation, and material handling solutions to create rapid prototyping and manufacturing equipment in support of waveguide component level assemblies throughout the new technology phase of the Hardware Development Life Cycle.

The right candidate possesses a background in optical hardware related engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, chemical, or optical engineering, with a focus on prototyping, is excited by fast design execution and vendor engagements and is energized by a rapidly changing, flexible work environment and the opportunities it creates.


3+ years of experience in process engineering and tool ownership in optical or similar semiconductor packaging

1+ years of direct experience in an industrial Research and Development environment developing scalable processes and tools with knowledge of optical fabrication processes including wafer-to-wafer bonding, wafer level packaging, cleans, material handling, process and tool definition and acquisition or related experience

BS or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc. or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skill in statistical analysis of raw data using commercial packages like JMP, with experience drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on limited information

Experience working with vendors or development partners on optical packaging projects or related projects

Experience with contributing to strategic roadmapping for processes, tools, and capability growth and development

Experience with tool requirements setting, installation, FATs, SATs


Identify, create, mature tool and process solutions for wafer-to-wafer bonding challenges and other related wafer level packaging needs

Serve as the tool owner and operational expert, develop Standard-Operation-Procedure documentation, safety protocols, and train operations team

Contribute to engineering efforts to solve complex prototype production tooling problems by supporting the design and development of new manual and scalable automated production equipment and processes

Implement statistical control methods & own yield improvement Pareto

Develop design of experiments (DOE) to quantify process windows and characterize process parameter responses

Work closely with research scientists on making engineering samples of next generation optical elements for near eye displays

Work collaboratively with cross functional partners, including planning, production, metrology, reliability, front-end patterning, and mechanical equipment and engineering teams to establish prototype, process and tool requirements and specifications for internal and external partners

Execute structured problem solving strategies to record, analyze and solve problems in the assembly processes, materials and tooling

Communicate effectively with both management, peers, and external partners

Familiarity with metrology tools: 2-D and 3-D microscopes, Optical Measurement Machines, mechanical testing equipment

Experience with and around robotic material handling systems, including tool software programming and machine interface modification

Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including tool and process tracking and data entry

Experience creating, tracking and organizing documentation, experimental results, standard operating procedures (SOPs), work-in-progress (WIP) logs
