The Concept Assembly Team works with product and research teams at Meta Reality Labs to rapidly build, scale, and maintain prototype hardware. We perform prototype builds ranging from a dozen to several hundred, and we then maintain that prototype hardware for internal use. Our team of technicians specializing in mechanical and electrical rework, as well as FW/SW troubleshooting and calibration use the experience gained through early builds to inform future designs for emerging products and technologies.

As a Mechanical Assembly Prototype Engineer, you will act as a liaison between our team and the cross functional partners to understand their needs and advocate how our team can support. You will teach, guide, and mentor the technicians in techniques and best practices used in mechanical assembly of prototypes. You will take primary ownership of fixture and packaging design, as well as DFM and DFA for projects we take on. You must be able to work independently, while also seeking guidance and feedback from peers and customers. Improving both workflow and communication efficiency should be the driving motivation behind all the work you take on.


4+ years experience in a technical field involving assembly in a prototyping or line environment

Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

Experience with system level design and working with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Product Design, Research, etc.

Knowledge and experience in various manufacturing methods and process such as: 3D printing, CNC machining, molding, electrical integration

Familiarity with standard shop tools and equipment (Dremels, drills, hand saws, files, etc.)

CAD experience (NX, Fusion 360, SolidWorks), design of original parts

Experience with problem solving and working independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Effective communication skills and should be clear and concise by default


Find and solve complex assembly/integration problems, collaborate with Industrial Design, Engineering and Research teams to resolve design challenges and help improve prototype process to unblock teams that need a well thought out and robust solution

Use computer aided designs (CAD) to create 3D models and 2D drawings according to established specifications

Drive project work and establish achievable project load for team members to achieve goals

Communicate and understand client needs, establish effective timelines and execute to the quality required

Ability to juggle numerous projects at once while honoring tight deadlines and deliverables

Review mechanical component CAD or parts from our customers and provide DFM/DFA feedback during assembly to Engineering Product Design Teams wherever needed

Guide customers towards functional and production scalable processes and materials. Act as a consultant between the Engineering Customers and the assembly method to be used

Work with the customer to determine design intent and act as a liaison between the customer and the manufacturing vendors

Communicate effectively with cross functional partners to both anticipate design risks and respond to issues encountered during assembly, suggesting solutions or mitigation actions that balance cost, schedule, and project goals

Design and build assembly fixtures, packaging, and other minor prototype projects to improve team services/execution of proto builds

Familiarity with camera modules and optical systems

Mass Production experience (working with overseas manufacturing)

Experience using NX CAD software package to improve or redesign parts

Thorough knowledge of GD&T

Experience with standard quality control and inspection plans

Experience designing fixtures and assembly aids for a production environment

Familiarity with manual and CNC machine operations
